Who we are as CD: NGI

The Chief Directorate: National Geospatial Information (CD: NGI) of the Branch: National Geomatics Management Services (NGMS) within the National Department of Land Reform and Rural Development (DLRRD) is South Africa’s national mapping organisation, responsible for establishing and maintaining the national geodetic and control survey system, providing national aerial imagery and mapping coverage, and offering professional and advisory services.

Mandate of CD: NGI

 The functions of CD: NGI are mandated by section 3 A of the Land Survey Act 8 of 1997 (as amended), where:

"The Chief Director shall be in charge of such geodetic and topographic surveying and geo-spatial information services in the Republic as the Minister may direct and, subject to this Act, shall -

 a)     promote and control all matters connected with those surveys and services.

 b)     conduct such geodetic, topographical, and other survey operations as may be required.

c)     acquire such aerial photography or other remotely sensed imagery as may be required.

 d)     establish and maintain a national control survey system.

 e)     prepare, compile, and amend such maps and other cartographic representations of    

        geo-spatial information as may be required; and

 f)     take charge of and preserve the records of all geodetic and topographic surveys, maps

       and aerial photography or other remotely sensed imagery."

The details of the duties are expanded on in the approved Policy Framework for Geodetic Surveying, Aerial Imagery and Mapping (Chief Directorate: National Geo- Spatial Information) in terms of Sections 2A and 3A of the Land Survey Act, 1997 (Act No. 8 of 1997).

 Key Responsibilities:

Geodetic and Control Survey Infrastructure: CD: NGI establishes and maintains the national geodetic and control survey infrastructure, including an active control survey network of continuously operating GNSS base stations.

Aerial Photography:CD: NGI has the largest repository of historical aerial photography dating back to 1926 and continues to provide national programmatic digital aerial imagery coverage. National Mapping:CD: NGI provides national mapping, digital topographic, and other geo-spatial information, contributing to the South African Spatial Data Infrastructure.

CD: NGI represents the DLRRD as appointed data custodians for the (0.25m-0.5m) aerial imagery dataset, rivers and various terrestrial geodesy datasets, as per the section 6.2 of the Base Dataset Custodianship Policy of the Spatial Data Infrastructure Act 54 of 2003. As of the 12 July 2018, the office represents the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development as the coordinator for Geodesy, Aerial Imagery and Land Cover themes.
